I'm an American (gal)! That's what Io sono Americana means, and that's about all the Italian I can speak! This blog is about my long awaited, much anticipated, and coming of age trip to Italy! I anticipate that much of my writing will be about food (hey-I'm going to Italy!), interesting people and fun experiences! I will also be sharing an occasional "WINE" (not to be confused with WHINE!) Wish me luck!

A day of rest and reflection...
September 2, 2011
Today was a rest /travel day! As it turns out, we finally conquered the transportation system in Rome. We successfully negotiated a bus (64) to the termini train station to Rome airport! Yeah for us! We slept in, ate breakfast at Hotel Giolli, showered, packed, and headed out. On the way to the bus Tami activated the phone borrowed from Eric (thanks) which will give the ability to talk if needed.
So, what haveI learned thus far? Here's my down and dirty dozen ways to survive Rome:
1. Plan on getting lost-that way you don't feel disappointed in yourself when you do get lost. All roads lead to Rome, but again, none of them are straight.
2. Eat before you get grumpy. I say this for Tami's sake who dealt with my hypoglycemic crabbiness! Grazie Tami
3. Buy a sim card in Italy so you can share with your friends!
4. Avoid small children. It seems the Romans are not fearful of losing their children and let them run about unsupervised. I found myself yelling "watch out!"and"careful" and of course they ignored me!
5. Similar to number 1, avoid asking storekeepers directions. They can't be bothered unless you want to buy something. Io non capeshe linglasi
6. Accept that there are a lot of smokers-this is not the US and smoking is rampant. That being said, very few obese people were seen except for the tourists! And maybe a few rolly Polly kids!
7. Take a siesta each day. In english it means "life saver"
8. Use the bathroom (WC) when it's there-you never know when you'll see it again!
9. Fill up your water bottles at the fountains. It seems weird, but these running fountains are your source of water which we needed in the heat of the day!
10.When possible, sit on the bus. When standing, it is very likely that you will find an armpit in your face, and it is even more likely that the armpit has never met a deodorant. I'm SURE of that!
11. When in a hotel, here's a 3 letter word that will save your life:FAN! Yes, on day 3 we saw a hotel worker carrying a fan! In a minute we had one in our room and for the first time did not sweat to death! again, there is a God!
12. Forget your camera now and then so you can see the people and sites with both eyes fully present! I did this in the Vatican and really enjoyed the experience because I wasn't worked about getting a good shot!
This afternoon we traveled back to the airport to meet our friends Sally and Nicole. The trip to Sorrento was pretty tame till we got to Sorrento. Imagine twisting, curvaceous roads that can barely fit two European cars with Kama kazi people in scooters passing on BOTH the left and right! The rule was no rules! Tami got us to our hotel safe and sound. We had a little help from our friend Clarisse (my GPS) as well!
The hotel settimo cioli is situated along the cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples and Sorrento. OMG breathtaking nature as beautiful as the work by Michael Angelo! We ate at a fantastic local restaurant called La Fenici! Once again I opted for an anti pasta buffet filled with veggies, olives, etc. The vino dela Casa and bread were also to die for! For my NJ friends and family, you know what I mean when I say Callandra's bakery!
Ciao for now!
